This little pond is not far from the trail. In the background is Turquoise Lake, with the edge of Leadville visible in the upper right.

The lake was named for the turquoise gemstone that was mined in the surrounding area. Most of the mining took place in the 1930's when two Navaho Indians discovered nearly a thousand pounds of rough ore. The light-colored strip at the lower end of the lake is Sugar Loaf Dam, which was completed in 1968.
